People with disabilities, as well, “have a Dream”
A Theater Group, established by AKIM Israel /Afula-Beit Shean branch, of adults (25-40) with intellectual and developmental disabilities, who live in the Beit Shean Valley, northeastern Israel.
The play, SIMPLE DREAMS shares their personal dreams.
About the play: The concept of the play SIMPLE DREAMS was originally created by Mrs. Anat Regev – Chair of AKIM Afula – Beit She’an and Valley branch. The play provides both information about people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and – at the same time – shares the dreams and aspirations of the actors – the very same dreams we all have.
The director and writer, Mr. Ido Weiss likes to say, “first came the dreams, then came the play.”
The group was founded during year 2014, as a local theater class, at Beit Shean Valley, and actually, from the beginning, even during the rehearsals, it was clear, that the play is, and will be an outstanding tool that would “express and show who we are, that we also have dreams and abilities, that we are capable, equal and deserve the same rights as all others“.
One of the actors plays the role of the narrator, who talks about what it means to be different in society.
While he is speaking, the dreams and aspirations of the troupe members come to life on stage, presented through theatrical, amusing and moving methods.
Based on their experience and after having appeared in front of Muslims, Druze, as well as Orthodox and non-Orthodox Jews, they believe the play is appropriate and attractive for all audiences, regardless of their age, language, faith, ethnic background or gender.
